The story of The Maverick begins in the 1930s, when a family built their lives in a single-family home on the corner of 15th Avenue E and E Aloha Street. Four generations would ultimately call the property home. Today, one small but meaningful reminder of that history remains—the original concrete front steps, which still stand at the corner of the property, connecting its past to its future.

By the 1960s, the original home had reached the end of its life. Rather than undertake a complete restoration, the family envisioned a new chapter for the site. The home was carefully removed, and in 1968 a six-unit apartment building—designed by the family's son, alongside his father, after returning from college—was constructed in its place.

Over the next 58 years, the property remained in the same family's care. With its prime Capitol Hill location and reputation as a well-maintained building, apartments were rarely advertised. New residents often arrived through referrals from friends, coworkers, and former tenants, with many staying for years and creating a true sense of community.

Cartwright Built is honored to become the next steward of this remarkable property. Our vision is to thoughtfully restore and reposition the building while preserving the history and character that have made it so special. Planned improvements include comprehensive interior renovations, modernization of building systems and refreshed building exterior and landscaping.

The Maverick represents more than a renovation. It is the continuation of a story that began nearly a century ago—a property that has evolved from a family home into a beloved neighborhood apartment building, and now into its next chapter. Our goal is to preserve its legacy while ensuring it remains a vibrant part of Capitol Hill for years to come.
